The Serbian Ambassador to the United States, Marko Djurić, has said the country’s national carrier could announce the introduction of nonstop flights between Belgrade and Miami by the end of the year, noting the service would be a “game changer for the region that has no nonstop flights to Miami”. The comments were made last week during talks between the Embassy and the Miami-Dade Beacon Council, the Miami-Dade County International Trade Consortium, and the Port of Miami. Mr Djurić noted the country was considering the opening of its third General Consulate in the United States in Miami due to the large Serbian diaspora in Florida, alongside existing ones in New York City and Chicago, with both cities served by Air Serbia. The Serbian flag carrier has made no secret it plans to introduce its third destination in North America in 2025 but has said it is evaluating the launch of either Miami or Toronto. However, in a further sign it is leaning towards the city in Florida, Serbia’s President, Aleksandar Vučić, said in an interview this week that flights to Miami would be launched soon. Located in South Florida, Miami is the second-most visited city in the United States after New York City with over four million visitors in 2022. It is also considered the US gateway to the Caribbean and South America and is the home to the world’s largest passenger seaport. Commenting on its future expansion in North America, Air Serbia’s CEO, Jiri Marek, said late last year, “There is always competition if the next destination [in North America] will be Toronto or Miami. Toronto has a large diaspora, but also high seasonality. Miami, on the other hand, is a year-round destination. Our partner, American Airlines, has a large hub at Miami Airport. Both destinations are similar in terms of profitability, but we have not made a final decision yet”. This year, Air Serbia plans to expand its long-haul operations with the addition of Shanghai and Guangzhou to its network and has secured the lease of an additional two wide-body aircraft, complementing the two A330-200 jets it already has in service.
